The board of directors at Maur Hill-Mount Academy decided to name the baseball field after an individual who, in the opinion of many, does not merit such recognition. Phil Baniewicz's tenure at MHMA lasted only 12 years, with his final year overlapping with Bishop Miege, which some argue should not be counted. He did not secure a single state championship during his time there. Instead, his actions brought attention to issues within the Catholic faith, including allegations of child abuse being swept under the rug and the hiring of a man accused of sexual assault against a child. Despite these controversies, the MHMA board not only hired him but also gave him an honor comparable to esteemed figures such as Father Edwin Watson, Abbot Barnabaas, John Flynn, and Guy Galley.
