I'm an active-duty Navy sailor directly affected by a recently announced policy change that could drastically impact my career and the careers of many of my fellow service members. The Department of the Navy has implemented a policy limiting medical shaving accommodations for sailors diagnosed with pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB)—common razor bumps—to a maximum of twelve months, after which administrative separation may occur.

PFB is a chronic medical condition predominantly affecting Black service members. It causes severe skin irritation and can lead to permanent damage if forced to shave daily. The current policy fails to acknowledge the seriousness of this health issue, putting service members in a position where they must choose between their health and their dedication to serving their country. This is not only unfair but detracts from the principles of equity and understanding that the Navy strives to uphold.

Leadership is about making informed and compassionate decisions that prioritize the well-being of all personnel. Unfortunately, the current decision-making reflects improper leadership and, in the eyes of many affected, may carry undertones of racial insensitivity that cannot be overlooked. We need leaders like Pete Hagseth, who are committed to equitable treatment and support for all service members, regardless of race or medical conditions.

I respectfully request the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense to immediately review and reconsider the policy on medical shaving accommodations. The Navy can and should maintain its high grooming standards while allowing for reasonable medical accommodations for those genuinely affected by PFB.

Service members with genuine medical conditions deserve to continue their careers without unnecessary obstacles. It’s time for change, and your support is crucial.
