The Issue

In our tight-knit community of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, the struggle for parking is becoming increasingly challenging. Located on the North East corner of Hancock Street, a recently erected outdoor dining structure has further strained our neighborhood’s parking availability. In an area where each parking spot is precious, this new dining space has not only cut down our number of parking spaces but intensified the competition for the few that remain.

Adding to this, our community already contends with Citi Bike docks on the opposite side of the street. While these infrastructures aim to promote cycling, they simultaneously exacerbate the parking problem in our dense, Brownstone-filled residential area. This situation is particularly detrimental to our elderly residents, who rely on the availability of nearby parking to maintain their independence and continue their day-to-day lives seamlessly.

The concern for our elderly neighbors is profound. Many have been longstanding residents who have contributed immensely to the vibrant culture and history of Bed-Stuy. By losing accessible parking, they face increased difficulty in conducting essential activities such as visiting the doctor, shopping for groceries, and attending social events that are vital for their well-being and connection to our community.

We recognize the importance of supporting local businesses and outdoor dining, especially in challenging times. However, it should not come at the expense of making life more difficult for other valued members of our community. We urge the relevant authorities to consider alternative placements or solutions that can balance the necessity of business patronage with the still critical need for accessible parking.

Let us advocate for a solution that works for everyone in our beloved Bed-Stuy. Please sign this petition to have the outdoor dining structure removed or relocated, allowing equitable access to parking for all residents.
