Remove Officer Schmidt to ensure peaceful boating on the Susquehanna River
The Issue
Growing up by the serene waters of the Susquehanna was a dream. But, our cherished times on the water have taken a stressful turn due to the actions of one local authority: Officer Schmidt. His authoritative and often arrogant demeanor has become an unwelcome presence on the river, turning what should be a peaceful day into a source of anxiety and frustration.
Officer Schmidt's constant patrolling and aggressive questioning of boaters have instilled a sense of dread among the community. While we understand the need for law enforcement to ensure safety on the lake, Schmidt’s approach is neither fair nor balanced. His relentless harassment often singles out families, young boat crews, and older captains alike, leaving many feeling targeted and unwelcome. This has led to a growing number of complaints, with residents expressing that their boating experiences have been marred by overzealous policing rather than legitimate safety concerns.
Officer Schmidt's actions are disproportionately affecting recreational boating, which should be a source of leisure and community bonding. There is an urgent need to restore trust between law enforcement and the community, ensuring that our waters are policed with a focus on encouragement and support rather than intimidation. By replacing or retraining Officer Schmidt, or by revising the department's approach to community interaction on the river, we can create a more harmonious environment for all.
This petition calls on the local police department to address Officer Schmidt's behavior and practices to foster a more respectful and supportive atmosphere. We implore stakeholders to consider solutions that would allow our community to reclaim the joy of being on the water without unnecessary interference.
Please sign and support our petition to advocate for a balanced approach to lake law enforcement that prioritizes community well-being and safety over aggressive tactics. Our River should be a place of relaxation and happiness for both local residents and visitors alike. Help us bring back the peaceful waters of Lake Clarke and the Susquehanna
