The Issue

For many of us residing in North Carolina, shooting is more than just a pastime—it's a necessity for protection, a tradition, and a means to provide food. However, the loud crack of gunfire not only disrupts the tranquility of our beautiful rural landscapes but also poses significant hearing risks and distress for our beloved pets, particularly dogs who are highly sensitive to noise. Suppressors, or silencers, provide an invaluable solution by significantly reducing the noise level of gunshots without affecting the performance or legal requirements.

Unfortunately, due to North Carolina's status as a National Firearms Act (NFA) state, acquiring and possessing suppressors is a daunting and overly restrictive process. The additional bureaucratic red tape and registration process under the NFA deters responsible gun owners from employing this crucial hearing protection, thereby exposing us, our families, and our pets to unnecessary harm. Suppressors should be as readily available as other forms of hearing protection, like earmuffs or earplugs used at shooting ranges.

In states that have mitigated suppressor restrictions, there have been no reported increases in crime rates associated with their use, according to the American Suppressor Association. Instead, these states benefit from a more considerate and less disruptive shooting culture. The ability to use suppressors means being a considerate neighbor, particularly in rural environments where people very much value their peace and quiet.

We propose that North Carolina reconsiders its policy to align with those states which have successfully and safely deregulated suppressor ownership for law-abiding citizens. This change would not only protect the hearing of residents across North Carolina but also uphold the serenity of our rural communities.

Petitioning to remove North Carolina from the list of NFA states is about more than just policy change; it is about fostering a community where responsible gun ownership and public health safely coexist. Let us make a practical choice for a quieter, safer North Carolina. Please sign this petition to urge our lawmakers to act now.
