Petition Closed

Mamta Sharma ,the Chairperson of National Women Commission ( NCW ) insensitively stated in her interview to the Indian Express "Women should be careful about the way they dress because such incidents are a result of blindly aping the West....Aping the West blindly is eroding our culture and causing such crimes to happen.". This statement made in the back drop of Guwahati blames the victim rather than condemning the assaulters many of whom are still at large.

The present Chairperson in an earlier context had said how women must not get upset with "sexy cat calls" as she wanted us to believe that sexy means beautiful and charming and women should feel proud about it.

The women of India would like to see a sensitive and an accountable commission and it not be looked upon as a space of giving away posts to women of the party in power.

Letter to
Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh
Chairperson Congress Party Smt Sonia Gandhi
I've just signed the following petition addressed to: PRIME MINISTER INDIA.

----------------
Remove Mamta Sharma as NCW Chairperson

I am shocked at the insensitivity shown by Mamta Sharma, the chairperson of the National Women's Commission the by continuously pronouncing statements that humiliate women. Instead of showing absolute sympathy and concern for the Guwahati assault victim, a crime which was committed that night of the 9th of July on not just one women but on all women of the country, the Chairperson insensitively stated in her interview to the Indian Express "Women should be careful about the way they dress because such incidents are a result of blindly aping the West....Aping the West blindly is eroding our culture and causing such crimes to happen."

It is our belief that these are not blunders or faux pas. She has little understanding of women's issues and the insensitivity shown by her not just through the above statements, but her year long tenure has shown a complete disregard for issues relating to women, which a large number of women have shared in newspapers and the web space.

I demand from you the removal of Mamta Sharma, because never has the dignity of the National women's commission in the last twenty years been lowered so much as this time. We also demand transparent processes of selection of chairpersons and members of the National and state women's commission especially bringing in those women who have experience and understanding on women's issues. not like the present Chairperson who came because of her political background and some experience of being in the Congress Mahila Morcha.

The women of India would like to see a sensitive and an accountable commission and it not be looked upon as a space of giving away posts to women of the party in power.
