The safety of my family and community are at stake due to a recent, deeply troubling event. The tragic death of Iryna Zarutska, a bright and cherished individual, has left our community in mourning and fear. This horrific crime unfolded on the Charlotte light rail, committed by a person who, shockingly, was released into our midst despite possessing a dangerous criminal past and serious mental health diagnosis.

Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes bears the responsibility for allowing this individual to walk free. With 14 prior offenses, it was a grave negligence of duty to release such a person back into society, where they could inflict harm. The Charlotte community deserves justice and assurance that our safety is prioritized and protected by those in positions of power.

It is crucial to hold Judge Stokes accountable for this egregious oversight. Her decision not only failed Iryna Zarutska but endangered countless others. By questioning her judgment, we advocate for a justice system that acts with precaution and foresight, ensuring that repeat offenders with severe risk factors are not permitted back into our streets unchecked.
