Remove Lucky Charms Cereal from Elementary School Lunch Menus

The Issue

Recalling my own personal experiences and those of many others, our kids come home hungry every day that Lucky Charms is served for lunch at school. As we know, the lunch served includes a cup of Lucky Charms cereal, yogurt, string cheese, vegetable juice, and assorted fruit. Nonetheless, this fare is simply not sufficiently filling, especially for the younger children who tend to eat early in the day.

Lucky Charms cereal, while does provide some nutrients, primarily consists of simple sugars and refined grains. According to the USDA, a regular serving of Lucky Charms contains 10g of sugar and only 2g of fiber. Compared with nutritionally dense foods, these figures demonstrate that this particular cereal is not an ideal option for a filling school lunch (source: USDA National Nutrient Database).

Moreover, ensuring that children get appropriate nutrition during school hours is crucial. This not only benefits their physical health, but their capacity to learn as well. A research article published in the Journal of School Health found that dietary behavior is linked closely to students' academic performance (source: Journal of School Health).

To rectify this situation, we demand that Lucky Charms cereal be removed from our children's school lunch menus. Instead, we propose that whole grain, fiber-rich cereals or other healthy alternatives, which are known to keep children full longer, be used.

Please sign this petition to help improve the nutritional quality and satisfaction of our kids' school lunches. We owe it to them to provide them a fulfilling meal that supports their health, growth, and academic success.
