The Issue

My name is April Williams, and I am a concerned parent regarding Cora Castlen Elementary School. I am writing this petition to address serious issues with the current school administration, specifically with the principal, Ms. Lisa Overstreet. Over the past year, numerous incidents have raised concerns about the safety, sanctity, and moral standards at our children's school.

Parents have witnessed a lack of proper supervision during school hours, leading to several safety concerns. Reports of bullying from a substitute increased, yet effective measures and interventions have been lacking until we took action ourselves. As a result, numerous children feel unsafe and unsupported, which significantly hampers their ability to learn and thrive.

Moreover, Ms. Overstreet has failed to foster a safe, inclusive, loving, and respectful school environment. ALLEDGEDLY there have been instances of; canceling parent involved events, leaving exterior doors open or unlocked to the school, not following fire drill protocols monthly, not maintaining an updated EOP, not ensuring the cleanliness of the school, not fostering job security for her staff in regards to them being able to safely express their concerns, assigning all students with silent lunches for the first half of lunch time every day, not maintaining the outdoor classroom that was bought with grant money, ignoring children and parents in the hallways, hiding out in the counselor office during school hours and at times when she should have been present, and much more have been reported by both parents and faculty, creating a divided rather than united school community. The educational environment that should be nurturing and encouraging for our young learners is instead becoming a source of anxiety and distress.

As stakeholders in our children’s education, it is our responsibility to ensure that the leaders in charge are both capable and committed to the highest standards of education and student welfare. Ms. Overstreet's approach has continuously fallen short of these expectations and has been met with concerns from various members of our school community.

The dismissal of a principal is never an easy decision, but it is critical when the welfare of children and the quality of their education are at stake. It's also the utmost importance that the educators teaching our children have a safe and supportive environment in which to work in. This petition calls for the immediate and permanent removal of Ms. Lisa Overstreet from her position as principal of Cora Castlen Elementary School. It is time for change, for a new leadership that genuinely values and prioritizes our children's well-being and education, as well as for our teachers and other staff.

Please join me in signing this petition to ensure our children in Mobile, Alabama, receive the safe and nurturing educational environment they deserve.
