Federal courts have now confirmed what legal experts, watchdogs, and the public feared: Lindsey Halligan was unlawfully appointed as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and used that position to bring politically motivated prosecutions against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

A federal judge ruled Halligan’s appointment invalid, writing that she exercised power she did not lawfully possess, and that all indictments she issued are void.

Her actions — under the direct encouragement of President Trump — represent a dangerous abuse of power and a threat to the independence of the Department of Justice.

Halligan had no prosecutorial experience, and was installed only after Trump ousted a prior appointee who resisted political pressure. She has no place in the leadership of America’s top law enforcement agency.

• Publicly affirm that political loyalty is not a qualification for federal prosecution.
• Review all cases brought under Halligan’s leadership for legal misconduct or invalid indictments.
• Reinforce professional standards for future U.S. Attorney appointments, including prosecutorial experience and Senate-confirmed legitimacy.

America cannot afford a Department of Justice run by political enforcers. We need impartial, law-abiding prosecutors—not personal attorneys installed to punish enemies.
