The Issue

I'm an active member of a cybersecurity club in Decatur, and being part of this club requires us to have effortless access to a wide range of online resources. Our club's activities involve using various cybersecurity tools hosted on reputable platforms like GitHub and leveraging advanced AI, such as ChatGPT. These resources are not just tools but essential ingredients in gaining competitive skills and knowledge in cybersecurity.

However, the Lightspeed Filter Agent installed on student Chromebooks in the City Schools of Decatur presents a significant setback. This filtering system blocks essential websites, hindering our ability to access the necessary materials, and adversely affecting our potential to learn and compete effectively. More troubling, it continues to monitor our activities beyond the school premises, infringing on our privacy and autonomy, raising significant concerns about the overreach of surveillance on young learners.

Globally, educators and students recognize the importance of freely exploring educational resources online. According to a report by the American Library Association, unrestricted access to information enhances a student’s ability to learn and grow in today’s technologically advanced world. With cyber threats increasing daily and the demand for skilled professionals in cybersecurity rising, it is imperative that students are given the right tools and environment to thrive.

We call upon the administrative authorities in the City Schools of Decatur to reconsider and remove the Lightspeed Filter Agent from student Chromebooks. By doing so, they will be fostering an environment conducive to learning while respecting students’ rights to privacy outside the school environment.

Please join us in advocating for a progressive educational environment in our schools. Sign this petition to urge the removal of the Lightspeed Filter Agent, allowing students to utilize the internet for educational growth and ensuring the protection of their privacy and autonomy.
