The Issue

Every morning, I drive my daughter to elementary school through the busy streets of our neighborhood. Our journey takes us through the intersection of Louise Avenue and Killion Street, where turn-limit signs have been placed years ago, creating a significant inconvenience and a potential hazard for parents like me. Instead of a straightforward route, we're now forced to make two challenging left turns across the bustling Ventura Boulevard, increasing the risk not just for us, but for all road users.

The implementation of these limit signs has unintended consequences. Parents rushing to drop their children off at school face unnecessary detours, consuming more time and fueling morning traffic congestion. Moreover, having to make these awkward turns across one of our city's busiest roads only compounds the danger, both for those in vehicles attempting the maneuver and for pedestrians crossing the street. It takes TWO hard lefts agains Ventura morning commuter traffic to get to school!

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlight the increased risk of accidents associated with improper and challenging turns, especially in high-traffic areas. Ventura Boulevard is no exception, known for its heavy traffic flow during peak hours. The current traffic sign setup contradicts safe driving practices and the need for efficient traffic management.

Instead of these restrictive measures, we propose a reconsideration of the current traffic control design at the intersection of Louise and Killion. A thorough traffic assessment may reveal alternative solutions such as better traffic signals, the introduction of a dedicated left-turn lane, or stricter speed enforcement measures to ensure the safety and efficiency of traffic.

There is virtually NO traffic issue at Killion & Louise. No danger. No back ups. its is the safest route for the 400+ homes zoned for Encino Charter Elementary. Currently, after 9 there are no restrictions, only 7-9 (peak school drop off time).

Our community deserves a school route that is both safe and convenient. By removing these limit signs and exploring more effective traffic solutions, we can reduce unnecessary risks and improve the daily lives of local families.

Sign this petition to urge the local transportation authorities to reconsider the traffic control methods used at this critical intersection, so that all road users can navigate safely and without added stress. Together, we can make a change for the betterment of our neighborhood's roads and the safety of our children.
