The Issue
Growing up as an anglophone in Quebec, I've always found French to be challenging. Now, with the introduction of Bill 96, also known as Law 14, this challenge has intensified. This law mandates that students in English CEGEPs take five French courses, which complicates the educational experience for non-French speakers. It hinders our ability to focus on the subjects we're passionate about and lessens our motivation to thrive in a learning environment. If students desired more French exposure, they would surely opt for a French CEGEP. Instead, we're caught in a system that demands more French classes, yet this doesn't equate to effectively learning the language. With the rise of technology and tools like AI, the experience may lead to mere surface-level memorization instead of true understanding and learning.
The introduction of Bill 96 by Premier Legault forms part of a series of controversial legislative changes. However, the well-being and educational success of CEGEP students seem to bear the brunt of these reforms, and yet, they are not where they should be in terms of learning and retention of valuable information.
This petition is a plea to reconsider the implications of Bill 96 on English CEGEP students. Our educational institutions should nurture student's capabilities, not hinder them. By removing or amending this bill, we could offer a curriculum that is inclusive and considerate of anglophone needs and immigrant communities.
Let's foster a learning environment where students can excel and learn languages naturally, without coercion or impractical mandates. Our focus should be on building a system that respects diversity in education while balancing Quebec's bilingual nature. Join me in calling for the repeal of Bill 96 in English CEGEPs. Let’s make our education system fair and encouraging for all. Sign this petition to voice your support for a sensible and inclusive educational framework.
