Students all over the nation are struggling to integrate their academic life with their daily life outside of school. HISD is the 8th largest school district in the nation while being the biggest school district in the great state of Texas. HISD has 28 high schools, each providing a great amount of stress on almost every student enrolled. Most high school students in the district have between 6-8 classes, typically divided into "A" and "B" days.

Though this may be the case, we are students with lives outside of the classroom. Many of us have trouble integrating school life with our lives literally outside the classroom. "Literally" because most of the high school student body in HISD is attending virtual school. Our district requires schools withing HISD to assign students at least 2 assignments per week for each class a student is in. If we do the math: if a student has 8 classes, such as those attending the High School for Law and Justice, then they would have to do a minimum of 16 assignments in the span of 5 school days (Monday - Friday). This should seem even more rigorous, considering most teachers assign the deadline for an assignment as due the same day it is given.

Many of us high schoolers have picked up jobs, have been tasked with watching over siblings now that our parents have taken on more hours, have to balance fellowships, etc. - all while stressing about the deadlines imposed by our teachers, mandated by our negligent district. We are operating under the same conditions pre-pandemic: 8 classes, same-day deadlines, 2+ assignments per class every week, and no cutback on school hours or school days (for both in-person and virtual classes).

Our district, HISD, has failed to implement an equitable policy that allows students to mentally prepare and do schoolwork without fear of being behind on work and/or failing classes. There is no reason why our students in HISD (or in ANY district) should be operating under the same EXACT conditions as pre-pandemic as if we do not have mental health, among other things, to worry about. If it means anything to you, or if you are affected by the lack of measures taken by HISD, please sign this petition to relieve stress on our students within the unworthy district.
