As someone personally affected by the actions of Jela, a character on our television screens who consistently exhibits racist and bullying behavior, I am calling for her removal. This is not just about me; it's about everyone who has been hurt by her actions. Jela targets anyone more popular or likeable than herself, creating an environment of fear and discomfort.

It is well-documented that exposure to such behavior can have detrimental effects on mental health. According to a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry Journal (2019), victims of bullying are twice as likely to experience mental health problems compared to those who have not been bullied.

Racism too has severe impacts. A report by the American Psychological Association (APA) states that experiences of racism are linked with significant negative health outcomes including depression, anxiety and other serious, sometimes chronic conditions.

We cannot continue allowing this harmful representation on our screens. It goes against broadcasting standards promoting respect and understanding among viewers. We need characters who inspire us towards kindness and empathy - not those who perpetuate harm.
