Remove IXL from Wake County Middle and High Schools

The Issue

Growing up in Holly Springs, NC, I've experienced firsthand the challenges posed by the IXL learning program. Like many of my classmates, I've struggled not just to complete IXL lessons but to maintain enthusiasm for subjects I generally enjoy. The stress IXL induces is palpable, affecting not just our academic performance but our mental well-being as well.

IXL is supposed to assist in learning Math and English Language Arts, yet it seems to have the opposite effect. The program's setup often feels punitive rather than supportive. According to educational experts, effective learning should encourage progression through motivation, constructive feedback, and a sense of achievement (Psychology Today, 2022). However, IXL's system, which demands long hours to complete assignments often through a trial-and-error basis, significantly deviates from this approach.

Research has shown that excessive stress can negatively impact learning (American Psychological Association, 2021). Many students report feeling overwhelmed and pressured by IXL, which in turn erodes their desire to study. It turns our focus from understanding concepts to merely finishing arduous tasks, which is not the essence of learning.

Moreover, IXL's design can be discouraging. The manner in which it penalizes incorrect answers by setting you back several steps can be demotivating, taking away the sense of accomplishment. This approach has been criticized by educators for lacking efficacy in skill retention (Education Week, 2020).

For the sake of educational improvement and mental health, it is crucial to reevaluate and remove IXL from our middle and high schools in Wake County. Alternatives that support a more engaging and positive learning environment must be considered. Programs that use adaptive technologies and personalized learning paths offer students a way to learn at their own pace, improving both comprehension and retention.
