Charlie was a father of two young children, a devoted husband, and a symbol of Americans’ ability to talk through our differences. However, following the tragic and untimely assassination of Charlie Kirk, Harper Murray’s behavior has been deeply upsetting to those who admired and respected him, as well as to all decent Americans. Her actions reflect poorly on the values and integrity expected of a Nebraska volleyball team member.

Athletic teams are held to high standards of conduct, both on and off the court. Players are representatives of not only their team but also the educational institutions they are part of. Community members, alumni, and supporters expect athletes to demonstrate respect, sportsmanship, and empathy. Unfortunately, Harper Murray's actions in response to this tragedy showcase a lack of these fundamental qualities.

Making the matter even worse, this is not the first time that Harper Murray has embarrassed Nebraska fans and the athletic department, in past run-ins with the law, she was issued a DUI (driving under the influence) and was separately cited for shoplifting at Scheels. This latest incident only demonstrates that Harper has not learned her lesson and that more severe measures are needed. 

In order to maintain the integrity and reputation of the Nebraska volleyball team, it is imperative to hold athletes accountable for their actions. Removing Harper Murray from the team would send a strong message that such behavior is unacceptable and has consequences.

We understand that everyone processes grief and tragedy differently; however, as a public figure and a role model to many young aspiring athletes, Harper Murray has a responsibility to act with dignity and respect. Her continued presence on the team undermines the values and hard work of those who strive to uphold a positive image of Nebraska volleyball.

We urge the administration and athletics department to take immediate action. Let us stand together in demanding integrity, respect, and accountability in our student-athletes.
