The issue

Pictured is one of the more than 80 little red flying foxes that were found entangled in the netting at Noosa Golf Club in January 2026. Multiple mass wildlife rescue operations were needed this month, involving local Wildlife Carers and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. It is extremely distressing for those involved.

Little red flying foxes play a crucial role in pollinating native trees in Australia. The species is already vulnerable to a loss of feeding areas due to logging and land clearing.

Despite the scale and seriousness of the harm occurring, Noosa Golf Club is refusing to drop the nets. The club has stated they will not remove the nets due to potential financial loss from golf balls entering the forested area behind the course. Noosa Golf Club have also raised concerns about the cost of the cherry picker and flood lighting (approximately $4,500) and have gone as far as asking wildlife charities to cover these costs.

Noosa, renowned for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant wildlife, must be a place where humans and nature coexist harmoniously. The netting, while perhaps initially intended to serve a practical purpose, now stands as an unnecessary hazard. The entanglement and subsequent deaths of wildlife are preventable tragedies that Noosa Golf Club has the power to halt.

We understand it is human to make a mistake. But now it is time for Noosa Golf Club to do the right thing and so we urge the management of Noosa Golf Club to remove the existing netting and replace it with wildlife-friendly netting. This action would not only demonstrate a commitment to preserving our natural heritage but also enhance the golf club's reputation as a responsible and environmentally friendly establishment.

Please join me in calling upon the Noosa Golf Club to take immediate action to protect our cherished wildlife. Sign this petition to show your support for a greener, safer, and kinder environment for all creatures that call Noosa home. The wildlife of Noosa needs our voice now more than ever.
