Remove GST on Sanitary Products to Combat Period Poverty

Remove GST on Sanitary Products to Combat Period Poverty
The Issue
For many women and girls around New Zealand, having a period isn't just a discomfort, it's a hurdle that limits educational and financial opportunities. Every day, some of us are unable to show up for school or work simply because we cannot afford these basic necessities during our period. Unfortunately, the imposition of GST on sanitary items increases this issue - hence the pressing need for change. Globally, an estimated 1.2 billion women lack access to basic sanitation and hygiene (source: World Health Organization). It is unjust for the government to classify sanitary items as a 'luxury,' when in fact, they are an essential item for many. By removing the GST on sanitary products, the cost can be reduced, resulting in broader accessibility and lessening the effects of period poverty. Therefore, we call on our representatives to lift this tax and help alleviate period poverty in our community. Please sign this petition to lend your voice to this crucial cause.
