Remove geese from Buxton Pavillion Park
The Issue
This summer, I haven’t seen one single family sitting on the grass in Buxton Pavilion Park. No picnics, no games, no gatherings. My toddler loves to run on the grass at the park, but I have to stop him, otherwise he would be running around in a goose toilet.
Buxton Pavilion Park used to be a vibrant community space where families and individuals could relax, play, and enjoy the natural beauty. However, the increasing number of geese and their excrement problem have transformed this beloved park into an unwelcoming environment. Goose droppings are not only unpleasant, but they also pose a health risk, especially to young children. Besides, the waste contributes to the degradation of our local ecosystem, leading to pollution of the grass and nearby water bodies.
We believe our park should be a safe and clean space for all. According to the RSPB, each goose can produce up to 3 pounds of droppings per day, collectively leaving the park overrun with waste. Many communities facing similar issues have successfully managed wildlife populations through humane methods such as habitat modification, deterrence programs, and relocation. It is vital that we approach this problem thoughtfully, ensuring respectful treatment of wildlife while prioritizing public health and safety.
With this petition, we urge the local council to take immediate action to manage the goose population in Buxton Pavilion Park. We propose a comprehensive plan that includes:
1. **Habitat adjustment:** Modifying areas of the park to make them less attractive to geese, such as changing mowing practices and using natural barriers.
2. **Deterrence programs:** Utilizing safe and humane deterrents to encourage geese to relocate.
