Remove Flock Surveillance Cameras in Greenville & Simpsonville, SC

The Issue

We, the concerned residents of Greenville and Simpsonville, South Carolina, call for the removal of Flock surveillance cameras from our neighborhoods.

Flock cameras are not just ordinary security cameras — they are a centralized mass surveillance system that tracks, stores, and indexes the movements of every person in public spaces. Unlike traditional cameras, Flock’s system allows for permanent data collection and sharing across agencies, which raises serious privacy, civil liberty, and safety concerns.

In addition to privacy concerns, Flock’s system has demonstrated serious security vulnerabilities. Their prior public demonstrations and API access issues showed that anyone with minimal technical skill could access sensitive data, including locations of cameras and even potentially the movements of people. This is not hypothetical — the technology has already been exploited and proven insecure.

While security is important, this level of mass surveillance is disproportionate and invasive. It treats every resident as a potential suspect, undermining our rights and freedom in public spaces. Traditional security concerns, such as property protection, can be addressed without turning communities into a searchable database of everyone’s movements.

We believe that privacy is not a crime. Residents should be able to live, travel, and conduct their daily lives without being permanently tracked and monitored.

We urge the Greenville and Simpsonville authorities to:

Immediately remove Flock surveillance cameras from public areas.

Review and implement privacy-respecting alternatives for public safety.
Commit to transparency and public consultation before implementing future surveillance measures.

We call on local leaders to prioritize civil liberties, security, and the trust of their residents over mass data collection.
