The Issue

In Pettis County, Missouri, flock cameras are currently tracking and logging millions of vehicles, capturing details such as bumper stickers, car makes, and even scratches. This information is then stored in a nationwide searchable database, leading to concerns over privacy and civil liberties. Many residents, including myself, feel this level of surveillance is unwarranted and subjects law-abiding citizens to constant monitoring.

The introduction of these cameras in Sedalia was not put forward to a public vote. Instead, the decision was made directly by the City Council, bypassing what we believe should have been a democratic process. The council signed a $94,600 contract with Flock Group, Inc., a company specializing in monitoring systems, without consulting the community. This lack of transparency is alarming and raises questions about accountability and oversight.

Civil liberties advocates argue that this kind of omnipresent observation infringes on personal freedoms and privacy. While law enforcement may argue that these systems aid in crime prevention, the absence of public dialogue and potential for misuse by the police is concerning. Oversight mechanisms, or lack thereof, need to be scrutinized to prevent any possibility of abuse of power.

The people of Pettis County deserve a say in decisions that affect their privacy and rights. We urge the City Council to reconsider and remove these flock cameras until a public discussion and democratic vote can occur to determine their place in our community.

Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving our civil liberties and the democratic process. Together, we can advocate for transparency and ensure that the voices of Sedalia's residents are heard and respected. Sign and stand up for our community's rights today.
