The Issue

In Hernando County, a growing concern is sweeping through the community—the installation of Flock Cameras, advanced surveillance systems that track the comings and goings of residents. I, like many of you, treasure the sense of freedom and privacy that our community offers, but this is now being compromised by overreaching surveillance measures.

Flock Cameras are designed to read and record the license plates of every vehicle that passes by, amounting to thousands of pieces of personal data collected daily. This monitoring raises alarms about privacy and the safety of our personal data. As citizens of Hernando County, are we ready to accept being tracked at every turn? Are we prepared to give up our right to privacy?

Statistics illustrate a worrying trend. In regions where such surveillance systems are implemented, data breaches have occurred, compromising sensitive information. Moreover, there is limited evidence supporting the effectiveness of these cameras in significantly reducing crime rates. Instead, they predominantly serve as a tool for mass surveillance.

While security measures are important, we must implement solutions that respect individual privacy rights and promote transparency. We propose the establishment of a community board to oversee the use of any surveillance technology in Hernando County. This board would ensure that any technology deployed respects our privacy rights, has proven effectiveness, and serves the public interest.

Your voice matters. Join us in standing against excessive surveillance. Let's remove Flock Cameras from Hernando County and protect our community's privacy. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to find more balanced methods to ensure safety without infringing on our privacy. Together, we can champion our rights and secure a future where safety and privacy coexist harmoniously.
