The California Fish and Game Commission is responsible for overseeing land use and its impact on animal protection. This includes setting hunting rules, limits, and seasons as well as recommending to the Department of Fish and Game approval/denial of permitting of land use based on encroachment of endangered species.
It is clear based on public outcry over many years that the majority of voters in California want their environment and animals protected (whether endangered or not) and that responsible management is expected of the Governor. This expectation extends to those appointed by the Governor.
Dan Richards, appointed by the Governor to the California Fish and Game Commission, who recently posted a picture of him hunting a Mountain Lion, although legal, has clearly shown a quality that is inappropriate and undesirable to be on a Commission responsible for protecting the very creature he hunts. This conflict of interest clearly shows there may be other personal traits that may be in conflict with the responsibilities held in the position of a Commission member.
Therefore, Dan Richards should be immediately removed from his position and replaced with an individual with qualities, traits, and personal beliefs that are more in-line with the responsibility of holding a Commission position.
Furthermore, since it is unknown the extent of which Mr. Richards' values have been exercised in policies and recommendations, we ask that the California Fish and Game Department immediately suspend any actions involving issues that involve recommendations or proposals by the Fish and Game Commission.
