Remove corruption in the GCPS school system- Truly ask us what to do instead of faking it!
The Issue
We, the concerned parents, students, and educators of Gwinnett County, on behalf of this decision, are holding them accountable concerning the recent piloting of clear-backpacks policies that took effect from January 6 to January 24. Following this, against an overwhelming opposition of 87% from students and 54% from parents in a survey, this district has moved forward by ordering these specific types of see-through backpacks, costing $1.3 million. Little did we know, they had already bought the backpacks before they even sent out the survey.
This large expenditure might have been directed toward more specific needs, like feeding the hungry or providing mental health services, while some of it could have also been used for effective security measures like metal detectors, that are tried, tested, and work in all schools. A decision which insults the intelligence in the community for going against both the survey results and real school safety, therefore, will be termed as a negative decision.
Furthermore, the pilot program permitted one small opaque bag, measuring 6 inches by 9 inches, which offers no realistic security advantage since a regular pistol comfortably fits into the dimensions of this opaque bag. The initiative, therefore, is not effective in preventing weapons from being taken into schools. History has also shown that weapons used in school violence were not concealed in a backpack but were carried on their person by attackers, defeating the argument behind the clear backpack initiative.
This is a clear example of misguided priorities and a lack of transparency, and we must act now before this overreach escalates further. We cannot allow this costly, ineffective measure to be implemented without real, meaningful solutions to school safety. We are demanding that Gwinnett County Public Schools immediately stop this pilot, revisit their strategy for ensuring school security, and use the funds in ways that are more effective and evidence-based.
