Remove Cameras and Portable Restroom at Broad Run Farms

Remove Cameras and Portable Restroom at Broad Run Farms
The Issue
The Broad Run Farms Civic Association (BRFCA) plays an integral role in managing shared community spaces in Sterling, VA. However, it is crucial to stress that BRFCA does not have the authority to monitor properties or provide security consent. Any enforcement of rules is strictly confined to shared communal areas, and any decision affecting access restrictions should rightfully be determined by a full membership vote.
Despite this, recent developments have seen the installation of security cameras and a portable restroom within the community by the BRFCA without member consultation or a democratic vote. These actions have raised significant concerns among the residents regarding privacy and the proper use of community resources. It is not within the BRFCA's jurisdiction to assume law enforcement responsibilities, which should be handled by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office if there are valid safety or crime concerns.
The presence of security cameras is an infringement on privacy rights of the residents. Cameras, when unwarranted, can create an environment of surveillance, making community members uncomfortable within their own neighborhood. Furthermore, these surveillance measures can be seen as an overreach of BRFCA's intended role and authority.
Additionally, the installed portable restroom, though intended for convenience, should only be considered necessary during special community events. Its presence otherwise is a misallocation of community funds and resources, and once again, should have been decided by the community members it affects.
In light of these concerns, we urge the BRFCA to promptly remove the security cameras to respect the privacy and autonomy of the residents of Broad Run Farms. We also request the immediate removal of the portable restroom outside of its use for special events. Ensuring our community’s decisions are made collectively reinforces our values of democratic governance and mutual respect.
Sign this petition to uphold our community's right to privacy and ensure community resources are used only with proper member consent and for their intended purpose.
