As a local resident and daily commuter, I've witnessed firsthand the safety hazards presented by the build outs placed on Mearns Road. Once a smooth and accessible route, the road has become a challenging obstacle course for both drivers and pedestrians. It's apparent that these additions, meant to calm traffic, are ironically placing us all in harm's way.

Build outs extend the curb into the road, presumably to slow vehicular speed and enhance pedestrian safety. However, they have done the opposite on Mearns Road. Crowding the road, they force vehicles into each other's lanes, especially during peak hours.

It’s a gamble every time anyone drives, cycles or walks this route, uncertain whether one of those near misses could one day become a tragic accident. For pedestrians, a casual walk is dampened by the constant fear of a vehicle mounting the pavement.

Notably, Mearns Road is a key link for local schools and businesses. It's not just families walking their dogs or cyclists enjoying a weekend ride; it's young children heading to school, workers commuting, and elderly residents trying to access local shops. 

We need to prioritize the safety of Mearns Road for everyone. I urge East Renfrewshire Council to remove these build outs. Alternatives such as speed cameras or speed tables can effectively slow traffic without endangering those who use the road or pavement daily.

 I'm calling on the community to rally together in support of removing these hazardous build outs. By signing this petition, we compel the local council to take decisive action and make Mearns Road safe again.
