The Issue
Sable Otey, the current board member of MSCS District 5, is threatening to remove Dr. Feagins as MSCS Superintendent. This initiative doesn't resonate with the opinions of the district's students, parents, teachers, and community members who recognize Dr. Marie Feagins' diligent efforts as our Superintendent.
Ms. Otey is putting personal feelings ahead of the needs of Memphis students and therefore needs to be removed from her position as an MSCS board member. Her blatant disregard for Dr. Feagin was evident by her walking out while Dr. Feagin was speaking during the Special Call Meeting on the evening of 12/17/24. Further disrespect was shown when Ms. Otey alluded to Dr. Feagin being the reason for a former employee's mental health battle with suicide.
Removing Sable Otey would mean that the school board would not have a majority, and they would be unable to remove Dr. Feagins as our Superintendent. If you reside in District 5, please consider our children and sign this petition. Here is the District Map.
Dr. Feagins has contributed significantly to improving our educational system. She is battling truancy by fostering open communication with parents of absent children, one of the district’s most prominent issues. Moreover, her presence in Memphis schools and communities has visibly increased, illustrating her commitment to the district's wellbeing. Above all, Dr. Feagins has consistently shown openness to feedback, demonstrating the type of leadership we need in our district.
Unfortunately, Sable Otey is advocating her removal on baseless claims, without properly considering the consequences for the district's students, parents, teachers, and larger community. We must stand against this unmerited removal of a competent and devoted superintendent.
