In our community, the presence of additional bike lanes has significantly reduced the number of car lanes from an average of four or five to just two. This has caused not just a severe increase in road congestion but has also brought about safety concerns, as these lanes tend to harbor accidents. It's important to note that despite the increase in bike lanes, there is a still significant vehicle dominance on our roads. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 83% of trips are made by car while only 1% are made by bicycle. This imbalance raises a question on the necessity and safety of such bike lanes. Moreover, several studies suggest that poorly designed bike lanes can increase the risk of accidents (Federal Highway Administration). Therefore, we urge local authorities to reconsider the design and existence of bike lanes in our community in favor of safer, more efficient road conditions.
