In December 2025, I was involved in an unfortunate accident with a cab driver in Brockville, Ontario. Shockingly, neither the driver nor the taxi company owner cooperated, leaving me stranded without the necessary insurance information. This experience subsequently left me grappling with a back injury and no financial support to cover my physiotherapy treatments. 

This incident is not isolated, as many residents of Brockville have voiced concerns over the reliability and accountability of local taxi services. Often cited are the lack of transparency in insurance coverage and the erratic service quality. These inadequacies significantly impair the community's trust and reliance on these services for safe and dependable transportation.

The solution to these issues seems clear: introduce competition through reputable ride share companies by removing the current barriers preventing their operation in our city. Ride share services have proven track records of providing reliable, efficient, and consumer-friendly options in many other regions. They typically include insurance transparency and effective accountability measures, which should be the standard in any community.

By allowing ride share companies to operate in Brockville, we can foster a competitive market environment that encourages better service from all providers. Such competition will likely result in improved reliability, ensure proper insurance oversight, and may even lower costs for consumers. Additionally, it raises the standard of safety for passengers and incentivizes taxi services to elevate their operational standards.

We urge the Brockville City Council to prioritize the needs and safety of its residents by taking decisive action. We need to remove the current legal and regulatory barriers that hinder ride share companies from entering our market.
