Remove attempt limits in major government exams
The Issue
In recent years, the restrictive policies on the number of attempts allowed for major exams like JEE Advanced, UPSC, and various government job exams have become increasingly problematic, leading to unnecessary stress and even tragic outcomes among students.
As someone who has personally suffered due to these limitations, I believe it is crucial to address the lack of flexibility and understanding in the current educational and examination systems. During class 11th and 12th, I was burdened with a severe blood infection that hindered my ability to perform at my optimal level in these examinations. Despite being a school topper in class 10th, my dreams of entering IIT were devastated by the limited attempts allowed by the JEE Advanced exam.
The pressure of performing within a constrained number of attempts adds a significant layer of stress on students, many of whom might face unforeseen challenges, such as health issues, during their best years of preparation. Each student is unique and deserves a fair chance to prove their potential without the shackles of arbitrary restrictions. Not everyone can perform their best under such constraints or has the same resources and circumstances to support them.
Removing or increasing the attempt limits for these exams would potentially reduce student stress levels, decrease instances of student mental health issues, and allow for a more level playing ground. Such a change would provide every aspirant a fair and equal shot at achieving their dreams, regardless of their life challenges.
According to various studies, the mental health of students is increasingly at risk due to heightened examination pressures. By acknowledging the diverse backgrounds and challenges students face, and allowing them unrestricted attempts at their desired exams, we can alleviate some of these pressures and better cater to student welfare.
I urge the concerned authorities to reconsider these restrictive policies and provide students the freedom to decide how many times they wish to sit for these exams, thus granting them the freedom to succeed on their own terms.
