Remove Appointed Cheboygan School Board Member Travis Neville
Remove Appointed Cheboygan School Board Member Travis Neville
The Issue
The Cheboygan community is asking for accountability and leadership that reflects the values of our public schools. Travis Neville currently serves on the Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education through appointment, not election. Since being appointed to this position of public trust, Mr. Neville has made a number of public social media comments that have deeply concerned parents, educators, and residents throughout our community. These comments include posts that demean women and minorities and remarks that appear to trivialize inappropriate relationships between teachers and students. Statements like these are incompatible with the responsibility of helping oversee a public school system responsible for the safety, dignity, and education of our children. This is not a partisan issue. Members of our community across the political spectrum — conservatives and liberals alike — have spoken out because this issue is about respect, judgment, and the example set for students. The concern is so serious that three members of the Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education and the district Superintendent have publicly called for Mr. Neville to resign. Ordinarily, voters could address this through a recall election. However, because Mr. Neville was recently appointed, the legal timeline prevents our community from initiating a recall at this time. School board members must demonstrate integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to representing every student and family in the district. When those standards are not met, the community must speak. We ask the State of Michigan to review this situation and take the appropriate steps to ensure that the leadership of Cheboygan Area Schools reflects the respect and professionalism expected of those entrusted with overseeing public education. Add your name to stand with students, educators, and community members who believe our schools deserve better.
