Remove Andrew Simutinta as Unilus Law Association President

Remove Andrew Simutinta as Unilus Law Association President
The Issue
If we don’t fight the mindset that makes us think that way, then we’re not fighting at all. This petition is deeply personal for me because it represents not only a stand against an individual who has shown clear misogynistic tendencies but also a broader challenge to a mindset that perpetuates gender inequality and violence against women.
Andrew Simutinta, the current President of the Unilus Law Association, has unfortunately used his position to spread hate against a movement that seeks to protect women who have been victims of gender-based violence (GBV). His public statements have not only been inappropriate but have actively worked against the strides being made to support victims of such violence.
The role of a leader is to inspire and guide with integrity and respect, qualities that Mr. Simutinta has regrettably failed to exhibit. His continued leadership is a disservice to the values this association represents and sets a poor example for future leaders within the University of Lusaka (Unilus). Faculty and students alike have started questioning his capability to uphold the morals and objectives that the Unilus Law Association stands for.
The unfortunate and harmful views expressed by Mr. Simutinta do not occur in a vacuum. They contribute to a wider culture that trivialises the very serious and lived experiences of GBV survivors. In Zambia, over 25% of women experience some form of GBV, a statistic that underscores the urgent need for advocates who are both empathetic and dedicated to change. We need leaders who are not only aware of these figures but are willing to act decisively to reduce them, not ones who demean or undermine efforts to bring about justice and support for victims.
Removing Mr. Simutinta from his role would not only act as a direct response to his inappropriate behaviour, but also as a reaffirmation of what the Unilus Law Association and the University of Lusaka stand for—equality, respect, and human dignity. Our goal is to elect someone committed to positive change, who will work tirelessly to support both women impacted by GBV and preventive measures for the future.
I urge you to sign this petition to remove Andrew Simutinta from his post as President of the Unilus Law Association. Together, we can make a statement against misogyny and promote a safer, more equitable future for all.
