The Issue

Easter weekend was marked by an action that deeply wounded our community and disrespected the legacy of Africville. Eddie Carvery’s symbolic trailer, a poignant reminder of our heritage and continued fight for our community, was removed by the Africville Heritage Trust Board. This action wasn’t just about taking away a physical structure—it represented yet another instance of the board and executive leadership putting their self-serving interests above the needs and wishes of Africville's people.

This isn't an isolated incident. It reflects a broader pattern of behavior by those in power at the Africville Museum who have increasingly lost touch with their foundational duty: to preserve and honor the rich history and emotional landscape of Africville. The heritage of Africville is not theirs to rewrite or remove. Decisions that alter or erase the symbols of our struggle and resilience must not be made without the input and consent of the community they claim to represent.

The current leadership has demonstrated a lack of respect for the true spirit of Africville and its people. Their actions convey a disregard for the pain endured by those who fought for justice and recognition. By removing Eddie Carvery's trailer without consultation or notice, they have proven they are no longer fit to steward our shared history.

We demand that the Africville Heritage Trust Board and all executive members be removed and replaced with individuals who truly represent and understand the community's interests. Leaders who will engage in open dialogue and prioritize the not only the preservation of Africville's legacy with integrity and respect but also help build its path to a brighter future. It is time for an administration that views its role as protector of history and promoter of the community’s voice.

We call upon community members, allies, and supporters of Africville heritage to join us in this fight for rightful representation. Sign this petition to demand accountability and initiate the change needed to safeguard and champion our history and future for our future generations.
