To whom it may concern,

I am initiating a petition asking for Amy Schumer's account to be removed from Instagram. Since the beginning of the Israel-Palestine conflict which commenced on Oct. 7, 2023, she has posted numerous images and slogans which undermine the ongoing plight, suffering and killing of Palestinian civilians. I believe in free speech and everyone’s right to express their opinion. However, Amy Schumer's reaction to the conflict between Israel and Palestine is reckless, dangerous, and extremely unhealthy to public debate and understanding of this conflict. 

Amy Schumer currently has more that thirteen million followers on Instagram. Yet it is becoming increasingly clear that Amy Schumer is abusing her celebrity fame and social media reach to propound fanatical, toxic and sectarian political standpoints of this war, while having no concern regarding the validity and impact of her actions or for the wellbeing of millions of currently suffering civilians.  

On Oct. 20 Amy Schumer posted an image in which the capitalized slogan “THE HOLOCAUST HAPPENED BECAUSE OF PROPAGANDA” multiple times. On Oct. 27 she posted a cartoon image of a women holding a sign saying, “Gazans Rape Jewish Girls Only in Self Defence.” Her posts are one-sided, simplistic caricatures which showcase little to no knowledge of the historical and political complexities and realities of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Considering the millions of individuals which follow her on Instagram, her actions have been detrimental to public opinion surrounding this very important issues.  She must be stopped.   

Even more importantly, Amy Schumer has reacted to public criticism of her viewpoints by disabling the ability of Instagram users to comment on her posts, thus eliminating any possibility of public discourse and exchange of opinions taking place. This is an irresponsible and immature reaction which demonstrates Amy Schumer's inability and unwillingness to engage in fruitful dialogue. 

It is crucial that Instagram officials or any other governing authority hold Amy Schumer accountable for her actions and set a precedent for the future. Fame is no excuse for spreading misinformation and politically extremist standpoints. Fame and the ability to thoughtfully and compassionately express one’s opinion is a responsibility which Amy Schumer is currently not capable of handling.
