The Issue

As a resident of Greene County, Indiana, I am deeply concerned about the proliferation of Flock Safety cameras in our community. These cameras are marketed as a tool for enhancing public safety, yet their presence raises serious concerns about privacy, government overreach, and the potential for abuse.

Flock Safety cameras are Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) that capture images of vehicles and store the data, sometimes even sharing it with third parties. While proponents argue these cameras aid in crime reduction, the truth is that they pose a significant threat to personal privacy and civil liberties. Greene County’s residents are unaware of the extent of data collection and the potential misuse of this information. There is no guarantee that these cameras won’t be used for profiling, unwarranted surveillance, or tracking individuals without probable cause.

Consider this: According to a report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ALPR data can reveal personal information about individuals such as where they go, who they associate with, and their routines. This is not just an invasion of privacy; it’s an infringement on the constitutional rights of every Greene County citizen.

Our community prides itself on its values of freedom, independence, and respect for personal privacy. The installation of these cameras undermines these core principles, making law-abiding citizens feel like they are under constant surveillance. There is scant evidence to support the idea that Flock cameras effectively deter crime, yet we are expected to trust vague assurances over real risks.

Therefore, we urgently call on our local government officials to remove all Flock Safety cameras immediately from Greene County. There are more effective and less intrusive ways to ensure public safety without compromising the privacy and rights of our community members. Investing in community-based policing, enhancing neighborhood watch programs, and fostering strong relationships between law enforcement and the community are viable alternatives.

By signing this petition, you can help protect the citizens of Greene County from governmental overreach and ensure that our rights to privacy and personal freedom are upheld. Stand with us to make Greene County a safer and freer community.
