The Issue
As an Iranian American, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision to appoint Ali Javanmardi to lead the Voice of America (VOA) Farsi program. At a pivotal moment in history, when unity is crucial among Iranians around the world, VOA has chosen a divisive figure whose controversial views do not reflect the aspirations of the Iranian people.
In recent years, millions of Iranians have found hope and a common cause under the leadership of Reza Pahlavi. He has emerged as a unifying figure, rallying Iranians both domestically and in the diaspora towards a shared vision of freedom and democracy. However, VOA’s selection of Ali Javanmardi—a known critic and a divisive personality—undermines this movement and risks alienating the very audience it seeks to serve.
This issue transcends individual preferences; it strikes at the heart of a broader effort to present Iran with a viable alternative to its current regime. President Trump's administration has boldly stood with the Iranian people, challenging the oppressive clerical regime that has held Iran back for decades. Yet, VOA’s decision threatens to dilute this message by promoting a leader whose views could unravel the progress made toward a united opposition.
The Voice of America should embody and echo the ideals of unity, freedom, and the democratic aspirations of the people it serves. Its leadership should align with these values and unite people rather than deepen rifts. Therefore, it is imperative that a leader who embodies these principles—and who respects the people’s chosen figurehead, Reza Pahlavi—be selected to lead the VOA Farsi program.
Please join me in urging the responsible authorities to reconsider Ali Javanmardi’s appointment and replace him with a figure who can genuinely represent and support the voice of a united Iranian opposition.
