Remove a Scam Ad Campaign from PornHub (Before It's Too Late)
Why this petition matters
TrafficJunky is the service that hosts ads on PornHub and a variety of other high-traffic adult websites. I uncovered a deceptive ad campaign whose goal is to scam vulnerable users out of their hard-earned money.
The ads in question promise a "free" sex game and link to the website However, after clicking through all of the introductory pages on the site, one arrives at a screen prompting you to enter your credit card information for "age verification." Reading the fine print, it seems that entering this info subscribes users to a 2-day free trial of an unrelated dating website, which will then renew monthly for almost $40. It is obvious that couching this information in fine print is intended to deceive users and hide the charges that will be sent to their credit/debit card. In addition, the fine print is positioned to the right of the credit card info screen such that mobile users will not be able to see it without swiping to the right.
These ads are run by a company called Glondon Ltd. Googling the company reveals testimony, like this, from users who feel they have been scammed. It also pulls up this website, which describes the ways in which Glondon continues to scam people through a web of interconnected sites. It seems that people who fall for these scams are forced to cancel their credit cards, as regardless of their ability to get in touch with Glondon's customer service, they keep getting charges indefinitely. The number on the website linked to on freegaysexgames.com for their customer service does not even work-- I had to go through several different pages to find one that did.
These ads violate TrafficJunky's content guidelines, which state that "A surfer must be allowed the option of opting out of additional offers in any subscriptions to a product." Here is a copy of the fine print from the screen that users who click on the original ad wind up on if they follow all the prompts:
"I agree that by clicking on 'FINISH' that the credit card data being submitted is mine and that I have read and agree to the terms of membership and billing. Your lifetime free access to Premium Free Games includes a 2 day free trial membership to Find My Forever Mate. If after 2 days you choose to remain a member of Find My Forever Mate and not cancel your free trial, your membership will renew at $39.95 and will recur monthly until such time as you cancel it. Your membership to Premium Free Games will remain Free for Life. You will also receive a free membership to SocialDataPros."
Users are not given the option to opt out of this 2-day free trial.
In addition, the ad violates the prohibition on "Anything misleading."
TrafficJunky, I hope that you will consider removing this deceptive advertising from your site, as people who are not internet-savvy are likely to lose money from it. You will be protecting the reputation of PornHub and affiliated websites and promoting a safer user experience. My good friend Christian Wyatt has already lost $80 from this deceptive practice and has had to cancel his credit card. It is on his behalf that I seek justice.
