Removal Of TCTC’s Phone Ban

Removal Of TCTC’s Phone Ban
The Issue
Recently Trumbull County Technical Center has issued a school wide phone-ban for their high school students. As a collective, TCTC’s students have found this ban extreme and difficult to adapt to. Students suggest that teachers should be able to decide how they want to decrease phone usage per their own classrooms. Teachers rules would follow certain guidelines that are put in place to follow the recently passed Ohio law.
Some examples students have thought of but are not limited to are:
- Students are prohibited from using their phones while their teacher/instructor is teaching.
- If a teacher allows a student too, they may step outside the classroom to use their phone for a brief period of time. This period of time should be no longer than “xyz” minutes, unless their instructor has approved of more time for a specific reason. Although, upon returning they must keep their phone in their pocket or bag until their teacher is done teaching, assigning work, or has ended the class.
- With teachers approval, either individually or collectively, students may use their phone. If students fail to listen to their teachers instructions regarding phone usage, they will receive penalty “xyz”.
As young-adults we believe moderation with phones is taught by teaching when phone use is acceptable and when it is rude and inappropriate. We as TCTC students would like a set of rules that all teachers, students, administrators, parents, and other staff can all mutually agree on. By signing the following petition you are stating you approve of a re-evaluation of TCTC’s phone policies.
