The Issue

On October 7th, 2025 — exactly two years since the horrific October 7th attacks — Earl Haig Secondary School started the day by playing the Canadian National Anthem not in English or French, but in Arabic.

This decision was incredibly hurtful and disrespectful to many Jewish students, especially on a day that already carries so much pain. While Canada is a multicultural country that embraces diversity, this specific act showed poor judgment and a lack of sensitivity toward those affected by the events of October 7th.

On top of that, the Ontario Education Act and provincial policy indicate that O Canada is typically performed in one of Canada’s official languages. — English or French. Choosing to ignore that rule is not only inappropriate but goes against provincial policy.

For these reasons, this petition is calling for the resignation or termination of Steve Yee, the principal of Earl Haig Secondary School. There needs to be accountability for decisions that make students feel unsafe or disrespected. Schools should be places of unity, not division, and this situation crossed a line.

It’s time Canadians stand up for respect, safety, and proper leadership in our schools.
