Removal of Non-consensual Daily Mail Article

The Issue

The Daily Mail have written a piece about myself and my personal lived experiences without my consent or any form of consultation. They've used pictures of me without my permission and have published my experiences without me even having a choice in the matter. The piece details experiences of mine that are of a very sensitive nature, including my experiences of severe online abuse and the suicide attempt I made last year. I would never choose to be in the Daily Mail. In the piece, they've been incredibly ignorant by directing people straight to my social media. The piece itself is about online abuse and to include my social media, where When I approached the Daily Mail 3 weeks ago, they responded to me "We made the editorial decision to publish this story because we felt it highlighted an important issue. You yourself note on your Instagram page that you wished to 'generate some conversation about online abuse'. Underneath the Daily Mail Online tweet about the piece, there has already been trolling.

Yes, I publicly shared my experiences about online abuse but I did this via my own social media and via the BBC, which was an incredibly supportive process. I did that in a safe environment, I was consulted and was massively supported throughout the process, both before and after. It was MY choice. I feel like my own experience is now out of my hands. The Daily Mail as a publication does not align with my own values or morals. This is just another example of this disgraceful publication exploiting whatever they can get their hands on. I have contacted both the writer of the piece and the Daily Mail to enquire the removal of the piece but it has been 3 weeks now, nothing has been done. I did not want to resort to a petition because they should be removing pieces upon request. I didn’t have the mental capacity to head up a petition but I've had to find it because nothing has been done. In the coming year I will be campaigning alongside others to work for change about how publications produce sensitive pieces, such as ones that contain experiences of suicide, self-harm, mental health, mental illness, death, loss and much more.

And yes, I understand they can write about anything but I wasn’t even consulted, not even an email or message. This isn't a fabricated story, this is my lived experience that I CHOSE to share. The Daily Mail are using pictures of me, pictures that I own and I do not have millions of pounds to create a legal case surrounding that issue. In the title of the piece it mentions my own suicide attempt, did I give my consent for that? No. This has impacted me greatly, I don't know what else to do because now one of my most painful life experiences is out in a publication that so many of us despise. To not have even been asked or consulted felt disgusting, it feels like I am now a fabricated story.

I would like this petition to result in the removal of the non-consensual piece the Daily Mail have written about myself, my experiences of online abuse and my suicide attempt. Including the pictures they have illegally used of me. I am hoping that enough support and pressure from this petition will lead to the Daily Mail removing the piece. Another issue that takes place with this Daily Mail piece is that much of what they have written about, has been taken from a BBC article that shared my experiences of online abuse. On the contrary to the Daily Mail piece, the BBC article had my full consent and I was actually interviewed for the article.

I am also hoping that this petition, aids in showing that these publications should not and can not get away with doing this to people, I am just ONE example of their exploitation. I truly am unsure what else I can do about getting the piece removed, so please if you can help by signing and sharing this, it is so deeply appreciated. This has impacted my own mental health and recovery, it will continue to do that until I can have closure that the piece is no longer up there with this horrendous publication.

This is not the first time publications like Daily Mail do this and it won't be the last. In the past 3 weeks I have seen 3 people in my online community be exploited by the Daily Mail or a similar publication. That's just what I have seen. What the Daily Mail have done to me, is a form of online abuse - exploitation. They directly linked my social media in the piece, a piece about online abuse... There was no consent, no consultation, no permission, no humanity. There still hasn't been. I've formally requested three times that they down the piece but nope, still nothing. This is not just a legal issue, it's a moral one. Please sign, share and help me get this piece taken down. This does not just happen to celebrities and influencers (as awful as that is in itself), this can happen to anyone and so much needs to change. I want this to help encourage people that they are in control and no publication can get away with this

I want them to take it down.

I can not thank you enough for reading my story and for supporting me with this.
