Remind the Government of Canada to act on truth and reconciliation.
The Issue
My family and I, like many others, have felt the deep wounds inflicted by the historical and ongoing impacts of Colonialism in Canada. The initial arrival of Settlers brought many things like trading and new friendships, these would have been a positive impact on this land. However we have all come to know of the damages that Colonialism has caused.
One real and painful act was the Sixties Scoop which saw Indigenous youth ( Children ) Taken from their homes and communities and put into foster care. Side note. My Mother was in Foster care and was put into a great home. But the damages from being taken away from your home cannot be repaired by simply giving a new life. It would be like taking a plant natural to the North and put in the South where cultures and nutrients would be different. Just as plants can only survive in their preferred climate i would say that humans are same. The Sixties Scoop is only one example of a negative impact of Colonialism.
This petition will help in the continuation of reconciliation between Indigenous persons and the state. The 94 calls to action of the truth and reconciliation commission is something that is great and will continue to help bring peace not just to Indigenous peoples in Canada but to all people in Canada because as one person starts to heal i believe all will feel of this as well. Progress has been made such as creating the day for Truth and Reconciliation. But further progress needs to be made such as with Child Welfare. Displayed in the following statistics
7.7 % Of Children under 14 in Canada are Indigenous.
yet......
53.8% of Children under 14 in foster Care are Indigenous.
If these numbers shock you this petition can be a way for you to add your voice to say that something needs to be done.....sooner rather then later.

The path to healing from these damages is multifaceted, involving not just recognition and acknowledgment but concrete action. For us, having a voice and being able to share our experiences is a vital step towards healing. As we unite our voices in a plea for tangible progress, we look to the Canadian Government to honour its commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 calls to action.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was a crucial step in addressing the historical injustices suffered by Indigenous peoples in Canada. The 94 calls to action highlighted by the TRC are not mere recommendations; they represent a moral obligation and a road map towards healing and justice. These calls include critical steps in child welfare, education, language preservation, legal, and equity measures, among others. It is imperative that the Canadian Government demonstrates unwavering commitment to advancing these initiatives.
Statistics illustrate the persisting gaps: Indigenous children continue to be overrepresented in foster care, and Indigenous communities face significant disparities in health, education, and economic opportunities. According to the 2016 Census, Indigenous peoples accounted for 52% of children in foster care across Canada, despite making up only 7.7% of the child population. Furthermore, education outcomes for Indigenous youth lag significantly behind national averages, shedding light on systemic inequities that must be urgently addressed.
Concrete actions outlined by the TRC, such as increased funding for Indigenous schools, healthcare reforms that respect Indigenous practices, and legal reforms to acknowledge Indigenous laws, need to be implemented with full transparency and accountability. Canada must ensure that these measures are not just initiatives but transformative actions leading to lasting change.
By embracing the TRC’s calls to action, Canada can work towards reconciling its past and building a future rooted in respect, equality, and justice for its Indigenous populations. As victims of Colonialism, my family’s resilience is tied to seeing these pledges become reality, so that future generations can grow up in a society that truly honours its Indigenous heritage.
Lend your support to this vital cause by signing this petition. Encourage the Government of Canada to fully commit to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 calls to action. Together, we can help heal the wounds of the past and forge a path towards genuine reconciliation.
