Remark the year 8 half yearly science exam to include oxygen as nutrient

The issue

When I received the results from my recent biology exam, I was devastated to find that I was marked unfairly on a particular question. A significant part of the evaluation focused on question 18, which stated: "Cells need nutrients to function. Explain how two body systems work together to deliver nutrients to cells." Like many of my peers, I discussed the circulatory and respiratory systems, emphasizing their crucial role in supplying oxygen to cells. However, I was marked down on the grounds that "oxygen is not considered a nutrient." This decision contradicted the widely accepted scientific understanding, as oxygen is indeed considered an essential nutrient for cellular function.

Countless students who chose to write about the circulatory and respiratory systems found themselves in a similar predicament. Despite oxygen playing a vital role in cellular respiration and energy production, examiners refused to acknowledge it as a nutrient. This oversight not only affected our overall grades but also hindered our academic progression and opportunities for future endeavors.

The oversight in marking has widespread repercussions. According to the Journal of Biological Chemistry, oxygen is crucial for the production of ATP, the primary energy currency of the cell. Without adequate oxygen, cellular metabolism is severely impaired, which reinforces the fact that oxygen fulfilling a role similar to other nutrients.

The current examination standards dismiss recognized biological facts, preventing a fair evaluation of student knowledge. Students should be assessed based on precise and widely accepted scientific definitions, not on the misinterpretation of examiners. This misjudgment sows confusion and undermines the credibility of our educational assessments.

I urge the examination board to reconsider the marking criteria for this question. The students who accurately identified oxygen as a nutrient deserve a revaluation of their answers. Acknowledging this scientific truth will ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of our educational system.

Please sign this petition to support the demand for a fair reassessment of our exam papers to reflect the correct understanding that oxygen is indeed a nutrient that is conveyed through body systems to the cells. we also ask that question 17 be rechecked with 15 as a valid answer
