This petition emerges from a deep personal concern for the Cheek community. We are a historical minority community that has long been burdened by industrial contamination. Our history has been tainted with adverse environmental impacts from the Exxon/Mobil facility to the north, the Goodyear plant to the south, and the now-defunct steel plant to the east. The result of this ongoing assault has been a plethora of health-related issues and a disrupted peaceful residential environment.

Our latest challenge is the proposed injection and sequestration site planned right in our Community, yet another potential source of chemical pollution that we simply cannot ignore. With studies showing residential proximity to such repositories leads to higher incidents of health risks [source: Environmental Health Perspectives], we cannot idly stand by as this threat looms over our heads.

For way too long, our cherished Cheek community has borne the brunt of various industries’ CO2 and other hazardous emissions. We have been exposed to stresses and health challenges many communities do not have to endure. It is high time the decision makers take a different path that respects the rights and health of our communities.

With this petition, we demand urgent action to relocate the injection and sequestration site away from our community, a step critical to preserve our health and uphold our right to a clean and safe environment for ourselves and future generations.
