Relocate Waikiki Parades and Festivals for Better Local Access and Workplace Convenience

The Issue

I've been living and working in Waikiki for the past five years and it is an exhausting pattern too familiar, not just to me, but to many in the same industry. Parades rolling down Kalakaua Avenue, and festivals held at the Waikiki Shell, affect local businesses and create inconvenient disruptions to locals' driving routes. They also create a predicament for Waikiki employees like us due to the severe parking crisis.

In 2019, Hawaii Tourism Authority reported an estimated 10 million tourists graced our beautiful island. It is undeniable that parades and festivals enhance our tourists' experiences. However, they deeply impact the living and working conditions of the locals, a consequence often overlooked. These events cause a major disruption to our local businesses and personal lives.

To alleviate these concerns and create a healthier balance between tourism and local lifestyle, we propose that parades be moved to Paki Avenue, a less congested location, which would keep Kalakaua more accessible for locals. Additionally, we propose moving festivals to the Diamondhead side of Kapiolani Park. This would alleviate the parking difficulties faced by employees of Waikiki, without compromising on the events themselves.

We believe this initiative will not only benefit local businesses and residents, but it'll boost the overall productivity and positive experience of the city. Let's together ensure that the charm of Waikiki shines not only for our visitors but also for the people living and working here. We believe change starts at home. Sign this petition to balance the needs of our community with the thriving tourist events in Waikiki.
