Berlin (epd) . The Protestant theologian Margot Käßmann has described the judgment of the Federal Court of Justice on the Wittenberg "Judensau" as a "wrong decision". The court ruled last Tuesday that the anti-Jewish abusive plastic may remain on the town church of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. "I think the decision is wrong," wrote Käßmann in her column in "Bild am Sonntag".
At first she also thought that a corresponding base plate would explain the sculpture as historical. "But the 'Judensau' simply still insults Jews today," wrote the former state bishop of Hanover and chairwoman of the council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).
Only a few years ago, the evangelical church began to work through its anti-Judaist traits. "Martin Luther agitated against Jews in Wittenberg," wrote Käßmann. And further: "The 'Judensau' is a message of hate. And hate messages do not belong in the public space."
