Some days it feels like world is falling apart. World peace and human rights are at risk. The world is a vastly different place than it was in 1951 when the United Nations was founded on the principles of neutrality, peace and international cooperation. The host country was chosen, that, at the time - embodied these values. The United States of America. And so, located in New York City, with land purchased with funding from John D Rockefeller Jr, The United Nations Headquaters was erected on land that was dedicated as 'Neutral Ground', for global diplomacy. This also means that it is not subject to the same laws that the rest of New York is subject to. Right now.
While the US has hosted the United Nations admirably in the past, the current political climate in the United States, calls into question if it is still the beacon of Neutrality, Peace and International Cooperation that it once was. This hinders the UN's innate mission.
Its time to find a more stable environment for the United Nations to call home, one that cannot be used a political tool for the gain of one nation or one government.
With this concern in mind, I call upon the leaders of the world to relocate the United Nations headquarters away from the United States and into a country that steadfastly promotes neutrality. A study by The Global Peace Index in 2021 ranked Iceland, Denmark, and Switzerland as among the most peaceful and neutral nations globally. It might be appropriate to consider such countries as potential hosts for the United Nations, fostering an environment conducive to fair and unprejudiced discussion.
This issue holds personal importance for myself and for millions globally, as the United Nations should act as a safeguard for peace and international law, not a pawn in the hands of any country's political directions. As global citizens, we have a collective responsibility to ensure the integrity of this institution that seeks to maintain global peace and understanding.
I urge you, irrespective of nationality or political stance, to sign this petition, ensuring the United Nations remains a neutral entity, embodying values of peace, equality, and cooperation.
