Relocate the Shelter to Better Protect our Children and Community

The Issue

As a concerned parent in Las Vegas, NM, I have witnessed frightening incidents that threaten the safety and well-being of our children and community. The current shelter by the park has, sadly, become a hub for illicit drug activities, crimes, and life-threatening situations. Recently, a man lost his life, a heartbreaking event that could have been prevented if the appropriate measures had been taken. This unacceptable situation also involves continual break-ins, robberies, and even sex offenders circulating freely, posing a major risk, especially to our children. Recently, an innocent child became a victim, an event utterly reprehensible and unacceptable.

These issues have been raised repeatedly to our officials and the police, but unfortunately, our pleas seem to fall on deaf ears. We need our voices heard for the safety of our families and to restore the peaceful sanctuary that our park once was.

Government statistics reveal that there were 426.4 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in Las Vegas, NM, in 2017. The national average during the same period was less than half at 382.9 crimes per 100,000 persons ("City-Data.com"). This highlights the urgency of the situation in our little town. It's time we restore safety and security for our community.

We respectfully demand that the City relocate the shelter away from the park, and enforce stricter law enforcement measures to curb the escalating crimes. Protect our children and our community. Please sign this petition because your signature can bring a positive change to our beloved town.
