Relocate the Gordon Avenue Shelter

Relocate the Gordon Avenue Shelter
The Issue
I am an individual deeply rooted in the communities of Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, BC, Canada. I am writing out of concern for the problems that have escalated over the recent years due to the proximity of Gordon Avenue Shelter to our vibrant residential areas. Our community is a blend of parents, elderly, and children who have been forced to bear witness to the open drug use, theft, and incessant police incidents occurring on our very streets— a reality that has become intrinsically linked to the presence of the shelter.
Gordon Avenue Shelter, ideally created to offer support and aid to the homeless and needy, has unfortunately evolved into a hub enabling theft, substance abuse and unruly behavior. We appreciate and support initiatives to help those struggling with homelessness, but we believe it's best to relocate this shelter outside of residential areas.
This shelter currently sits at the boundary of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, a stone's throw away from where we live, work, and raise our families. Given the increasing rates of criminal activities tied to its close presence, we propose the shelter be moved at least ten kilometers away from any residential district.
We are requesting a relocation of Gordon Avenue Shelter to a remote area where it can transition into a larger facility, pivotal in securing sustainable healthcare, housing, and support for the homeless population. There, the shelter can serve its true purpose— providing help for those needing it, without being a source of distress for the nearby communities.
Join us in enthusing a wave of change, in allowing the homeless to receive much-needed aid while ensuring that our residential neighborhoods remain safe and peaceful. Sign our petition, support the relocation of Gordon Avenue Shelter.
