Relocate the Anchorage bear — don’t kill it
The Issue
A brown bear attacked a hiker on the Basher Trail in Anchorage — and now officials are searching for the animal.
We all want hikers to be safe. But killing the bear is not the answer.
The woman survived and is recovering in the hospital. According to officials, the bear ran off after the attack and hasn’t threatened anyone else. There’s no evidence this was a predatory bear — most likely, it was startled or defending itself.
Yet now, state authorities are actively searching for it, and based on Alaska’s past actions in similar cases, this bear is likely to be killed if found.
We are calling on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to prioritize relocation and non-lethal intervention.
Make bear safety education and trail warnings a stronger first line of defense.
Anchorage is home to bears and people — and peaceful coexistence should be the goal. This bear doesn’t need to die. It needs to be moved to a safer, more remote habitat away from people.
Sign this petition to demand a humane response. Protect public safety and Alaska’s wildlife.
